  [TRIP TO FUTURE. Roman Ondak]

Verein Medienturm
Großmarktstraße 8b, A-8020 Graz

The Medienturm is located on the Southern outskirts of the project space of “real*utopia. Kunst im Grazer Stadtteil Gries” (“real*utopia. Art in the Graz-based district of Gries”), a site-specific exhibition context by < rotor >, realized in the frame of Graz 2003 – Cultural Capital of Europe and introduced in the traditional working-class and immigration district of Gries. The upper levels of the tower offer a good view to some centre zones of the district of Gries. The platform at the topmost elevator level accommodates a video monitor, which shows Roman Ondak’s work AUSFLUG IN DIE ZUKUNFT (“Trip to Future”) – a “guided tour” through this area. The audience can listen to the report of elevenyear-old Florian while scanning the district’s roof landscape beneath. The boy tells about the future perspectives of Gries, about some places that are (in his opinion) worth seeing, about anecdotes and persons. He uses future tense, but from details one will gather that some of what he says corresponds just to reality. The monologue continuously oscillates between the extremes reality and fiction.
Most of the circumstantialities that are addressed by Florian cannot be seen from above the tower; the vivid, childlike terminology, however, inspires dreams of possible
“settings” where the singular episodes of the adolescent story might take place.
