[CLOSENESS VS. DISLOCATION. Approaches towards Art Presentations on the Internet]

PANEL
Verein Medienturm
Großmarktstraße 8b, A-8020 Graz
07.03.2003

The panel NÄHE VS. ORT LOSIGKEIT (“Closeness vs. Dislocation. Approaches towards Art Presentation on the Internet”) is part of the online project MT03, which, since 2002, incorporates numerous artistic and theoretical contributions into an online data base.

On critical examination, the natural distance between observer and artwork increases through the dislocated spreading of its images. The dislocation of the claimed artwork and the discontinuity of the offered material complicate the formation of trust in the Internet as information pool; the increasing distribution of digitalized image and video material of different artworks can entail a change of art reception and thus also concern the media theoretical discourse. The basic concept of the integrity of artworks in connection with the possibilities of digital storage and processing increasingly shall be put up for discussion.
