Over the last few years Jan van der Ploeg has consistently researched the space between art and life. In his wall paintings, for both indoor and outdoor spaces, he uses a limited but robust palette. Van der Ploeg sees monochrome, repetition, variation and anti-illusionist depth as different manifestations, which he has appropriated from an industrial visual vocabulary.
They insert themselves collectively into everyday reality and function as sign, ornament or painterly illusion. Three-dimensionality becomes flattened to a fluid, elegant image of the present, as celebrated in the 1960s by the American painter Paul Feeley. (Friederike Nymphius, translated by Annabel Howland)

The Dutch artist Jan van der Ploeg currently is "artist-in-residence" at quartier21 and at the Graz-based Kunstverein Medienturm.
